  • Part 2 – Getting out of your own way

This month we are doing a series on goals and talking about how we can get out of our own way. This is part 2 in that series.

Hi! Last week I shared with you how I came to the conclusion that things two things were keeping my business stuck:

    1. I had no goal system in place. So no matter what I tried they were more like flailing attempts to find success rather than a systematic plan with steps, trackable actions, and end results.
    2. I was frustrated with my business (and parts of my life) and as a result I had some really negative ways I talked about my business (and parts of my life) but I didn’t really recognize it until I started to pay attention to it.

You can read that post here if you missed it.

So, before we can even get to setting goals in our business there is a major step we need to take first. That step is getting in the right mindset. Mindset plays such a huge place in business and many business owners skip over this step but wonder why they are stuck.

I have to completely agree with Mr. Jefferson on this point. If you don’t get the junk out of your head and get in the right mindset, you are doomed to fail and you have failed even before you begin.

Two of the things I needed to get past in order for me to succeed were:

    1. I didn’t really truly believe I deserved success.
    2. I didn’t really have much belief that I could make my business successful.

Now, the crazy part of this, for me, is that I didn’t really even know, at the surface, that I thought these two things about me. I am a fairly confident person and I do have faith somewhat in my abilities but over the years things happen, poor decisions are made, and we begin to doubt that we can do or deserve things. Or, at least, that is how it went for me.

I had to have a break through. I knew I had to come to terms with these two facts and that I wasn’t going to go any further in business, and in my life, than I had unless I got really clear  with myself about the fact that I did deserve success and I could be the one to bring success to myself.

Those of you who know me, know I am a spiritual, God-lovin’ gal. And during my time of trying to convince myself that I did deserve success, I prayed a lot. I prayed for months on end to try to sort out some things that were messed up in my business, and even more so, in my life. I was frustrated and got to the point I was angry with God when I wasn’t getting the answers I was looking for. I am not the most patient person. Searching for answers and a place to unload my frustration, I started reading the book ‘Disappointment with God’ by Philip Yancey. (I highly recommend it. Check it out here if you are interested).

So, fast forward a bit, and I had my little break through that I needed. After a lot of work, prayer, and searching, I finally understood that I had a heck of a lot more power within myself than I had given myself credit. I wish I could offer a detailed plan and a step by step guide but it just hit me one day that I deserved way better than I let myself believe, and I could really turn my business into what I wanted it to be.

It basically came down to the thought that ‘things won’t get better until I start thinking better’. Simple but true. I begin to see myself as someone wildly capable. I started surrounding myself with people who lifted me up (and got rid of anyone who tore me down). And I knew that I could do whatever I set my mind to. God had planted this kind of power and potential within me when I was created, and now I just had to use it.

I stopped the negative thinking especially in the way I saw myself. I just believed that everything I said would come true. I had beat myself up for a lot of years and it came true in the way I didn’t think I could do much of anything. So, I was going to do what it took to reverse that. If I was having trouble paying the bills, I refused to let myself say I was poor. I found a way to turn it around and be thankful that I had my own home. I stopped complaining that the sales weren’t coming in, and started to be grateful I had a business at all and started to make sure I was aware of all the good that was happening in my business. It was a mindset thing. And switching up my thoughts were making each day SO much better. I actually started to enjoy my business again!

So, your challenge today is to start setting yourself up for success. Start seeing the good in EVERY situation, and do not say anything about yourself that you don’t want to come true. It’s a good place to start.

There is a LOT of power in getting yourself situated in the right mindset and then setting goals. Next week, in part 3, we will talk about more positive mindsets and things you can do to structure your business in a more productive way. We are laying the groundwork so you can be a goal-achieving ninja!

    Until next time,

  • Goals and Getting out of Your Own Way – Part One

    goals-title

It’s June! How is this year already half over?! I cannot wrap my brain around that. I really think I was sipping champagne waiting for the clock to strike midnight bringing in the new year not that long ago. Wait, that wasn’t me. On New Years Eve, I was playing some old skool Mario Bros. at midnight with my kids not actually believing I had actually stayed awake to see midnight. Yes, that sounds a lot more like me.

But it has gone fast, hasn’t it? So, let’s make the rest of the year killer. It will be gone before we know it. Which leads me to talk about making the best of our businesses and how we can move up to the next level of success…

I was reading a story the other day. No, I think I was watching a video from a business coach type lady. I turned 40 a few days back and now my mind is a slippin’. Anyway, she was talking about how she was stuck making the same amount of money each year. And no matter what she did she couldn’t move up into a higher income bracket. Each year she made the same exact amount. This got my attention because I remember being at the same exact place in my own business. I could make x amount of dollars but not more. And I tried different things somewhat but honestly I was stuck, frustrated, and the frustration led me to being more stuck.

So, I started really diving into investigating what was causing me to be stuck. I read books, watched YouTube videos on business, invested in business coaches, paid attention to inspirational life leaders, and more. I also started to really become aware to my thought patterns, my internal dialogue, and how I thought about my business – and my life.

I came to the conclusion that I was getting in my own way in two ways:

My business wasn’t thriving for lack of me working – I was “hustling” (anyone else sick of that word, yet?). I worked a LOT but on the wrong things.

If you can relate to any of this, then hang with me. Because over the next month or so, I am going to start showing you where my business changed up big time for me. I started fixing these two areas that I uncovered (the no goal system problem and the ‘stinkin’ thinkin’ issue) and not to be too overly dramatic but a WHOLE new world opened up to me. A Whole new way of doing business and doing life opened up to me to be precise.

So, what about you? Are you working on a small business and you tend to be frustrated with the lack of sales, the amount of effort you are putting into your work, and you feel like it’s going nowhere? I have so been there and it’s not a great place to be. Am I rolling in the dough now and have no cares in the world? No but I have figured a few things out that have led me to a point where I can rely solely on my income to provide for myself, my kids, my two dogs, and two ducks.  (Yay because this girl does not want or have a need for a Sugar Daddy!). None of it happened overnight but it happened and for that I am enthusiastically, eternally grateful. I am honored to share with you. Go strong powerful women who are rocking their businesses and their lives!  Aren’t quite there? Like I said, hang with me. I want to see you get there, too.
